NASA is a partner in the $1.5 billion mission and supplied the telescope's infrared detectors. The observatory will survey billions of galaxies over the next six years, creating the most comprehensive 3D map of the cosmos ever made. It took Euclid just an hour to capture the nebula's latest beauty shot the five new photos accounted for less than a day of observing time.īy measuring the shape and movement of galaxies as far as 10 billion light-years away, astronomers hope to learn more about the dark energy and matter that make up 95% of the universe. Although the Hubble Space Telescope previously observed the heart of this galaxy, Euclid’s shot reveals star formation across the entire region, scientists said.Įuclid also took fresh photos of the Horsehead Nebula in the constellation Orion, a dramatic nursery of baby stars made famous by Hubble. The telescope snapped pictures of a relatively close spiral galaxy that is a ringer for our own Milky Way. In one picture, Euclid captured a group shot of 1,000 galaxies in a cluster 240 million light-years away, against a backdrop of more than 100,000 galaxies billions of light-years away. The photos were revealed by the European Space Agency, four months after the telescope launched from Cape Canaveral.Īlthough these celestial landscapes have been observed before by the Hubble Space Telescope and others, Euclid's snapshots provide "razor-sharp astronomical images across such a large patch of the sky, and looking so far into the distant universe," the agency said. Scientists on Tuesday unveiled the first pictures taken by the European space telescope Euclid, a shimmering and stunning collection of galaxies too numerous to count.

Up until the end of November 2007, Inkscape's source code repository was hosted by SourceForge. Since 2005, Inkscape has participated in the Google Summer of Code program. Inkscape's implementation of the SVG standard, although incomplete, has shown gradual improvement. įollowing the fork, Inkscape's developers changed the programming language from C to C++ adopted the GTK (formerly GIMP Toolkit) toolkit C++ bindings ( gtkmm) redesigned its user interface, and added a number of new features. They said that Inkscape would focus development on implementing the complete SVG standard, whereas Sodipodi development emphasized developing a general-purpose vector graphics editor, possibly at the expense of SVG. įour former Sodipodi developers (Ted Gould, Bryce Harrington, Nathan Hursten, and MenTaLguY) led the fork, citing differences over project objectives, openness to third-party contributions, and technical disagreements. Inkscape FAQ interprets the word Inkscape as a compound of ink and -scape. One of the main priorities of the Inkscape project was interface consistency and usability by following the GNOME human interface guidelines. Sodipodi, developed since 1999, was itself based on Raph Levien's Gill (GNOME Illustration Application). Inkscape began in 2003 as a code fork of the Sodipodi project. Created shapes can be further manipulated with transformations, such as moving, rotating, scaling and skewing. Embedding and optional tracing of raster graphics is also supported, enabling the editor to create vector graphics from photos and other raster sources. These objects may be filled with solid colors, patterns, radial or linear color gradients and their borders may be stroked, both with adjustable transparency. rectangles, ellipses, polygons, arcs, spirals, stars and 3D boxes) and text. Inkscape uses the standardized Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format as its main format, which is supported by many other applications including web browsers. It uses vector graphics to allow for sharp printouts and renderings at unlimited resolution and is not bound to a fixed number of pixels like raster graphics. It offers a rich set of features and is widely used for both artistic and technical illustrations such as cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming and flowcharting. Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor for traditional Unix-compatible systems such as GNU/ Linux, BSD derivatives and Illumos, as well as Windows and macOS. This fall, the Times published an op-ed by Michelle Goldberg-“Why Sex-Positive Feminism Is Falling Out of Fashion”-citing a TikTok-based “Cancel Porn” movement. The argument remains as contentious as it is unresolved. The phrase “pornography is violence against women,” wrote Ellen Willis, an influential pro-sex feminist, “was code for the neo-Victorian idea that men want sex and women endure it.” A vocal faction argued for an erotic-positive approach to rejecting sexual repression. But not all second-wave feminists agreed. Activist Andrea Dworkin famously argued that porn was detrimental to women, full stop. As society grapples with the implications, Pornhub has found itself at the center of a vitriolic global conversation.įorty years ago, debates about porn focused on the idea that the sex industry was inherently dehumanizing and rife with abuse. Beyond the masses watching porn, many at home also make it-and they make money doing so, through sites like Antoon’s. This shift in carnal consumption has had far-reaching effects, transforming sexual norms, implicating underage viewers-and victims-and creating new forms of cyber-capitalist sex work. Today, hard-core sex is instantly accessible on mobile devices, social media feeds, and VR headsets. It represented not just bad juju befalling the XXX site, but an overheated, inflammatory political climate in the ongoing war against online porn.īefore the internet, portrayals of sex acts were the purview of adult magazines and movies. Whatever the cause, Antoon’s inferno was searingly symbolic. Or, given the precision of the firebombing, wasn’t it a signature mob job? Months later, Montreal police issued a bulletin about a citywide arson spree, though there was no mention of the Pornhub blaze. Still another faction pointed to Q-minded anti-pornography crusaders. Others were persuaded that the livid father of an underage victim had the place burned down as revenge for homemade MPEGs uploaded onto Pornhub. Some suggested Antoon had set it up to collect the insurance money-an allegation he dismissed. To this day, it protrudes from the rubble like a headstone-or some telltale sex toy.Įveryone had a theory. All that remained was charred concrete, twisted metal, and a rusty two-story archway where the front door would have been. Antoon’s entire crib, however, was pyro’d. Whoever set the fire was a professional: Nobody was injured, the surrounding homes were barely damaged. As her shift ended around 6:30 a.m., the fire department was still extinguishing flare-ups. “It took a while to control because it was a big place,” explained Caroline Chèvrefils, a police officer on-site that evening. Arriving at the scene, he recalled, “I was devastated.” The conflagration raged all night. Neighbors were being evacuated in their pajamas. In reality, it took up to 80 firefighters to battle the blaze. Driving over, he told me, he kept hoping it would turn out to be something small-maybe just some teenagers messing around. By the time police showed up, the Pornhub Palace was in flames.Īntoon finally woke up when his brother got through on the landline. That said, he can’t help recounting how he lay in bed that night, powerless, two miles from the still-unfinished building, asleep at home with his wife and children, as the company’s security officer alerted 911. When the amount of water released from the dam is reduced after Columbus Day, the lake level is not expected to drop significantly for the remainder of the month of October and, if drought conditions ease in the fall and winter, it is expected to remain relatively stable through the month of December absent any major rainfall events. Because of this summer’s drought, the level of the lake is already at that elevation. This year the reduction will be begun on October 18.īy the middle of the fall, Lake Winnipesaukee is, on average, 15 inches below its springtime full level due to evaporation and releases from the lake that have occurred over the course of the summer. The flow of 30 to 50 cfs is the minimum flow needed to maintain the downstream aquatic life during this period. Instead, in the fall after Columbus Day, the releases from Lakeport Dam are reduced from a normal minimum of 250 cubic feet per second (cfs) to a flow between 30 and 50 cfs for a period of up to two weeks to allow for maintenance of the dams and hydropower facilities on the Winnipesaukee River. Unlike the other lakes in this schedule, Lake Winnipesaukee is not purposely drawn down in the fall. Not included in this schedule is Lake Winnipesaukee. Drawdowns also give property owners an opportunity to conduct any necessary repairs to their waterfront property, provided they first secure a permit from the NHDES Wetlands Bureau at (603) 271-2147. Lake drawdowns are conducted each fall to reduce winter ice damage to shoreline properties and to reduce spring flooding. NHDES reminds people that canoeing and kayaking have inherent risks, and paddling the state’s lakes and rivers is at the paddler’s own risk. The release will begin at 10 AM.Īt the first two of these sites the flow will be reduced to near normal levels by 4 PM that same day. On Saturday, October 30, a release will be made from Greggs Falls Dam in Goffstown to provide an opportunity for canoeing and kayaking in the Piscataquog River downstream. Also there will be a recreational release from Northwood Lake (Little Suncook River) on October 23 starting at 8 AM and end at 4 PM.Between 300 and 400 cfs will be released for that time period. Water release from the dam will begin at 8 AM and end at 4 PM. Horace Lake will have a release for recreational use downstream on Saturday, October 16.The schedule for these recreational opportunities is as follows: However, at three dams, the drawdowns will be initiated or accelerated on a specific Saturday in October to provide recreational opportunities for canoeists and kayakers in the rivers below these dams. In addition, the actual date at which the drawdown will begin could vary by a few days based on operational constraints. Since the hydrologic conditions and recreational uses of these water bodies vary, the degree and date of the start of drawdown for each lake vary and could be affected by the amount of rainfall during the period. Due to changing ice and hydrologic conditions, these levels can vary throughout the winter. The depth of drawdown listed above is not from the current level, but is from the normal full pond level. The values listed above are generally the maximum levels reached, although during any given year the levels reached can be either higher or lower due to weather conditions. These larger lakes generally do not reach their full drawdowns until mid or late March.Island Pond drawdown will also begin on September 7 for the purpose of construction on the dam.On October 11, the level will be returned to the normal drawdown. This is to facilitate work being done downstream at Island Pond Dam. Highland Lake in Stoddard will have a 1-foot drawdown starting on September 7.Upon completion, the water level will be raised to the usual winter drawdown level. Crystal Lake in Gilmanton drawdown will start at the beginning of October in conjunction with upstream bridge work.Conservation, Mitigation, and RestorationĬoncord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) announced today that the annual fall drawdown of the lakes and ponds controlled by dams owned by NHDES will be initiated according to the schedule below. You are opening yourself up to investigating the ineptitude of your users and supporting undocumented bugs in third party software. The level of cheapskate entitlement expressed in this thread will be as nothing to when these characters try to convert their inevitably botched documents and blame you if it doesn't work. I expect it will be just as messy as Quark to InDesign conversion.Īs someone with no skin in this game but with many years experience with data interchange I would seriously advise Affinity not to even consider supporting Adobe or other 3rd party formats. I hope people won't have the unrealistic expectation that INDL import will have as satisfactory results as though it were opening a native format. I generally find it easier to work that way than to try to fix all the inconsistencies left by conversion. Either I will keep printing from PDF, maybe importing that to Publisher to tweak the odd error we didn't catch the first time, or else import the IDML into Publisher only so I can manually move the content to a new Publisher file. When Publisher is able to release IDML import, I will surely do the same. When we have a converted file, I always create a fresh InDesign file and manually move over different elements, then I archive the converted file. InDesign itself can open the older Quark files, and the more recent (but still old) Quark files were converted by Markzware to InDesign. For some context, years ago we used Quark XPress, and we still have a number of files in that format. Otherwise I am left with all kinds of inconsistency. But in the end, it would have to be converted to PDF.įor my part, if I am moving a publication to new software, my main concern is to be able to get to the assets, particularly the text, but I don't keep the layout I recreate it afresh in the new software. If someone else has a suggestion, I too would like to know. If you receive an IDML file, you would still need some other program to be able to open an IDML and export to PDF, which besides InDesign itself, I don't really know what is out there. I think PDF is currently the only option. Hi, just wondering if anyone has a workaround to open IDML files in Affinity perhaps using another (free) program to convert it to a format Affinity can open? I have to say, that despite my earlier comments, I agree with you. I accept the flaws because the alternatives are slim and costly and because there are a lot of positives that the Affinity line brings to the table. I don't look a gift horse in the mouth. We're still at version 1.x. Otherwise, why not stick with Adobe? Adobe is the exploiter, Affinity is the alternative, even if imperfect. I think the only reason people are so upset is because Adobe is bleeding them dry with their subscription model. Then essentially bashing Serif for not seeing things their way. There are other issues I find more problematic, but I keep reading posts where some user insists his missing feature is the most import one of all. Import needs to be addressed no doubt, but it's not a deal breaker to me personally. Over the last 10 years no other company, neither Quark or Corel, or anyone else has even tried to create a full suite of pro design products. I'm not happy that the feature is not yet available but ecstatic that someone had the stones to compete with Adobe at all. Or you can get a copy of Xpress, which I believe imports INDD. If you have a bunch of INDD files you can continue working with them using InDesign as you have been. You're no worse off now than you were last month before Publisher was released. I imagine someone creating a new word processor app would have to ensure it was able to read MS Word documents, and this is no different.Īs mentioned, the IDML import is being worked on. It's a serious oversight to release version 1 after significant beta test, without this item. Maybe you're happy with a new product that can't read the interchange file format from the industry-leading product, but I'm not. There are certain basic expectations for any new product and at the minimum, it should be able to read existing files and not have to create them from scratch again. It's nothing to do with "level of entitlement". Note that there are two ways to import references, through the Web Connector or by exporting (see instructions on the left of the UAB guide page). To give you a complete picture, let’s take a look at a few more positions of a bit different sorts of fortresses. This will help you to add up those Elo points or perhaps even collect a few more trophies! You will save more games, and draw instead of losing interior positions. Now, as you have understood and remembered my previous examples, you definitely know more about fortresses than the majority of your opponents. Interestingly, if we added more pawns to this chain (White pawn on e4, the Black pawn on e5 the White pawn on d3, the Black pawn on d4) it wouldn’t change the evaluation: the position we see is a fortress! Once again White is unable to make any progress because of the stalemate threat. To make sure your experience with the bishop endgames is complete, I found one more example, that is less likely to be encountered, still, it is important to better understand fortresses. But Black can benefit from a few tempi he possesses to hold this position. The pawn is on h5, which means that if White had time to bring his king over, he would win. Now once again I’ll try to show you, how you can apply the acquired knowledge in practice: If White had the pawn on h5, he would have been able to play Kh6, forcing the black’s king out of the corner and winning the game in style! #4 – the Pawn on h5 But since the pawn is already on h6, White cannot achieve anything but a stalemate, as he’s incapable of forcing the opponent’s king out of the corner. Yes, that’s right, the bishop is of the “right” color and it controls the h8-square. Here we see one more interesting position. Hardly possible with seconds on your clock, is it?īy looking at this simple example, we can understand why it’s so useful to know the basic ideas behind a fortress. Play it out in your head to make sure it’s not lost.If you weren’t familiar with the first position, it would take you much longer to find a solution. Oftentimes, you play endgames in time trouble, and hardly have any time to think. Would you be able to solve this kind of position under tournament conditions? Or if black doesn’t take, White takes the pawn on b7 and we reach the same endgame. White cannot make a draw by playing on “regularly”, so he needs to act immediately:īlack is forced to take and he gets two corner pawns and the wrong color bishop. Please take a minute to think it through. Black will advance his pawns and slowly dominate. Of course, from first sight, the position seems totally lost for white. Black just stays in the corner for a draw.īut here comes the crucial question – How can you benefit from the basic knowledge in the more complicated positions? White cannot make any progress, as the bishop doesn’t control the square. Of course, this position is well-known to any chess amateur, being one of the most basic ones. This topic is difficult for many players because it contradicts one of the main chess principles: the material is the most crucial factor, and you don’t want to give up your material.Īs we will see in the following examples, sacrificing material in order to build the fortress often proves to be the only way of saving the game. Chess Fortress: What is it, how to build one, and how can this knowledge help from the practical point of view? I would like to investigate a topic, that I find extremely important, yet it feels like it’s ignored and misunderstood by most club chess players.įirst, let’s define, that a fortress is a position with the defending side down in material, yet impossible for the stronger side to make any decisive progress. Silence also proved a tiny bit better at making people feel less anxious. The experiment found that 60 seconds of the voice meditation app was slightly more effective at making participants feel less stressed and anxious. There was no change in the level of relaxation people felt after listening to the meditation or the silence. We have plans to continue collaborating and I am keen to explore how the results of this work might be applied to the creation and understanding of time-based art (installations, multimedia performance, and film) for the benefit of people in terms of wellbeing and health. When asked to listen to the woodland sounds for one minute, people felt 30% more relaxed, while stress and anxiety dropped. This research is first to present an integrated behavioural, physiological and brain exploration of this topic.Īrtist Mark Ware commented, "Art-science collaborations can be problematic, often due to a lack of shared knowledge and language (scientific and artistic), but the team at BSMS has generously sought common ground, which has resulted in this exciting and successful outcome. The study of environmental exposure effects is of growing interest in physical and mental health settings, and greatly influences issues of public health and town planning. Interestingly, the amount of change in nervous system activity was dependant on the participants' baseline state: Individuals who showed evidence of the greatest stress before starting the experiment showed the greatest bodily relaxation when listening to natural sounds, while those who were already relaxed in the brain scanner environment showed a slight increase in stress when listening to natural compared with artificial sounds. There was also an increase in rest-digest nervous system activity (associated with relaxation of the body) when listening to natural compared with artificial sounds, and better performance in an external attentional monitoring task. When listening to natural sounds, the brain connectivity reflected an outward-directed focus of attention when listening to artificial sounds, the brain connectivity reflected an inward-directed focus of attention, similar to states observed in anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. The team found that activity in the default mode network of the brain (a collection of areas which are active when we are resting) was different depending on the sounds playing in the background: In collaboration with audio visual artist Mark Ware, the team at BSMS conducted an experiment where participants listened to sounds recorded from natural and artificial environments, while their brain activity was measured in an MRI scanner, and their autonomic nervous system activity was monitored via minute changes in heart rate. This has been an exciting collaboration between artists and scientists, and it has produced results which may have a real-world impact, particularly for people who are experiencing high levels of stress." The lead author, Dr Cassandra Gould van Praag said, "We are all familiar with the feeling of relaxation and 'switching-off' which comes from a walk in the countryside, and now we have evidence from the brain and the body which helps us understand this effect. The study has been published in Scientific Reports. While naturalistic sounds and 'green' environments have frequently been linked with promoting relaxation and wellbeing, until now there has been no scientific consensus as to how these effects come about. Researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) found that playing 'natural sounds' affected the bodily systems that control the flight-or-fright and rest-digest autonomic nervous systems, with associated effects in the resting activity of the brain. |
